New posters and a trailer for Pixar’s Onward have been released, revealing more about the magic found within the studio’s upcoming urban fantasy film. Onward is the first of two new Pixar movies releasing next year (the other being Pete Doctor’s Soul) and it also marks the first time the studio has really delved into the fantasy genre. Pixar movies have obviously included fantastical elements before, but Onward is their first film to fully embrace all that comes with the genre.
The setting of Onward may be a fantasy world populated by elves and trolls and centaurs, but it is also a modern world where technological conveniences like cell phones and cars have largely replaced magic. It stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as a pair of elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, who on Ian’s 16th birthday receive a magic spell that will bring their father (who died when both were very young) back to life for just one day. But since magic isn’t all that common anymore, when they attempt the spell it goes awry, and they wind up bringing back only half their dad - just the bottom half, specifically.
In addition to Holland and Pratt, Onward also stars Julie Louis-Dreyfus as their mother, Laurel, Octavia Spencer as Corey, the quest-giving Manticore, and Mel Rodriguez as Colt Bronco, a centaur police officer and Ian and Barley’s stepdad. Previous trailers for Onward played up the fantasy characters in a modern setting, but this latest trailer shows more of Ian and Barley’s quest and the stakes involved. As has come to be expected with Pixar films, their quest will not only be an exciting and oftentimes hilarious adventure, but an emotional roller coaster for the two brothers as they try reuniting with their dead father. The story is even partially inspired by Onward director, Dan Scanlon’s own childhood where his father passed away while his brother and him were young. Given that personal connection, Onward is sure to be a thrilling fantasy quest with real heart.
Along with Ian and Barley’s quest, this trailer also offers a glimpse at what shenanigans the rest of the characters get up to. Pixar is very good at incorporating its characters in the story, and it’s good to see Louis-Dreyfus and Spencer’s roles aren’t minor ones. Corey the Manticore is herself trying to reclaim her adventurer spirit, and it seems like Laurel and her teaming up to rescue Ian and Barley will provide her the chance to do. Even Laurel, Ian and Barley’s mother gets in on the action, seen in this trailer swinging a big old sword against what appears to be some sort of concrete dragon. We’ll know more once Onward hits theaters in March 2020.
