A new poster for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood highlights a movie within the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton. While the film is another period piece from the fan-favorite auteur (following previous works like Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sees Tarantino return to his original playground of California, where he will (as the title suggests) be exploring the movie industry through his particular lens. The infamous Manson murders are said to be an element of the movie, but the main story involves fading TV star Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) looking to recapture their fame.
The trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood teased this particular element, showing Dalton perform “a lot of dangerous stuff” while headlining the TV series Bounty Law and later having a young girl praise his acting chops. It should be a lot of fun to see Tarantino, a full-blown cinephile and experienced helmsman, tackle the movie business in a unique fashion. And Sony continues to highlight this element in marketing, building up a career for Rick Dalton.
Released on the official Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Twitter page is a fun one-sheet promoting Dalton leading Operazione Dyn-o-Mite! alongside Margaret Lee. You can check it out for yourself in the space below:
The poster is obviously designed to emulate the era in which Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set (the 1960s), drawing people in with its beautiful, retro aesthetics. A case can be made this is certainly more pleasing to the eye than the movie’s official teaser poster, which featured DiCaprio and Pitt placed against a California backdrop. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Operazione Dyn-o-Mite! poster was actually in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a background prop to establish Dalton’s filmography. This wouldn’t be the first time a Tarantino production used the “movie within a movie” trope; most famously, Inglourious Basterds included the Nazi propaganda film Nation’s Pride as a key plot point.
As for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood itself, it won’t be much longer until Tarantino fans find out if his latest lives up to its on-paper potential. The film is confirmed to have a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, in honor of Pulp Fiction winning the coveted Palme d’Or 25 years ago. Given the talent on both sides of the camera, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood entered 2019 as one of the year’s most anticipated movies and its pedigree makes it a possible awards contender. Since it’s screening in-competition at Cannes, everyone involved must be pretty confident in its prospects.
