After the return of Arrow last night, next week will see some calm before the storm of the final few episodes as the relationships of our heroes are explored. All season long, Oliver and his new team have been grappling with the threat of Prometheus. Even after the reveal that he was Adrian Chase the whole time, things haven’t become any easier. Chase continued to play Oliver for a while, and last night’s episode proved that even with the public now aware of Chase’s alter-ego, hunting him down and fighting him isn’t an easy task. That battle will continue into the finale, with characters like Deathstroke joining up with the Green Arrow in a last ditch effort to stop Prometheus.
In the meantime, Felicity and Diggle have been dealing with issues of their own. For Diggle, he has to struggle with the burden of his vigilante lifestyle and how it affects him raising his child - something that’s made doubly difficult since his wife, Lyla, also spends her working hours fighting evildoers. Felicity, meanwhile, has been slowly crossing moral lines and working her way into the hacktivist collective Helix. In doing so, the show is able to explore sides of Felicity that are usually only examined in Oliver and Diggle. But amidst all the danger and intrigue, the core relationships of the characters are what keep us invested in them.
While this season has been light on romance and interpersonal drama, The CW has just released the promo for next week’s ‘Underneath’, which will use the tried and true bottle episode format to delve into it. Thanks to some unfortunate events, Oliver and Felicity will be stuck together, forced to finally confront their failed relationship ahead of the chaos of the impending finale. Check out the synopsis below:
As we can see, it’s not just Olicity that will get examined in the upcoming episode. Diggle and Lyla’s relationship has generally taken a backseat to the other drama on the show, but it looks like it will finally get another spotlight before more fighting breaks out. Lyla is always a welcome presence on the show, and it’ll be interesting to see two of the more grounded Arrowverse characters highlighted.
“Things get intense when Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) are trapped in the bunker together. Meanwhile, Lyla (guest star Audrey Marie Andreson) and Diggle (David Ramsey) deal with their marital issues.”
Of course, this renewed focus on relationships might set TV viewers on edge. General protocol is to reestablish emotional beats before a character’s death, and we know not everyone will make it out of the season alive. With Wild Dog and the new Black Canary already guaranteed to return in season 6, the chances are even higher that Felicity, Diggle, or Lyla might not be long for this world. If Lyla and Felicity both survive, however, here’s hoping they join up with Dinah to create the Birds of Prey.
Arrow continues Wednesday, May 3rd with “Underneath” at 8pm on The CW.
