Now the franchise has been successfully relaunched, will Danny and Debbie Ocean ever unite for Ocean’s 14? The original Ocean’s Eleven was a remake of 1960’s Ocean’s 11, featuring Rat Packer’s Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. The 2001 version from director Steven Soderbergh was a slick, stylish affair with a similarly all-star cast, where George Clooney’s Danny Ocean led a team that included Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Elliott Gould.
The success of Ocean’s Eleven led to two further sequels, with the franchise calling it a day after 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen. Clooney later ruled out a return to the series, citing the death of original cast member Bernie Mac in 2008. It was later confirmed in 2015 the series would receive a spinoff with Ocean’s 8, which would feature Sandra Bullock as Danny’s sister Debbie Ocean. The movie featured an all-female team that included Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, and Sarah Paulson. The movie also revealed Danny Ocean was dead – but implied that may not be the case.
Ocean’s 8 was a big hit, leading to rumblings of a sequel. It appears the studio deliberately spaced out the number of the movie to allow two further entries, before hitting Ocean’s Eleven again. The natural route would be Ocean’s 9, with Debbie reuniting her gang for another heist while recruiting a new team member to keep the dynamic fresh. Co-star Sarah Paulson has said she’d love to see either Emma Thompson or Bette Midler joining up, but a sequel has yet to be confirmed.
Of course, one thing fans of the series would love to see is Danny and Debbie Ocean reunited for Ocean’s 14. Ocean’s 8 deliberately leaves a question mark over Danny’s death, leaving the door open for Bullock and Clooney to work together. Having the dueling siblings trying to mastermind a heist together would be a fresh dynamic, and the two stars proved they had great chemistry together in Gravity. While the crossover is possible, one roadblock might be Bullock’s sequel allergy.
The star had terrible experiences making both Speed 2: Cruise Control and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed And Fabulous, leading her to swear off follow-ups in the future. She turned out a sequel to The Heat for this reason and while a Bird Box sequel hasn’t been confirmed, her involvement with one is far from a given. Ocean’s 9 hasn’t been confirmed yet, so it would want to be something special for the star to commit.
Audiences would likely flock to see Ocean’s 14 for the combined star power of Bullock and Clooney alone, in addition to pairing the different crews against one another. Ocean’s 8 proved the franchise is still viable after a decade long absence, but time will tell if the Ocean siblings ever end up working together.
