James Bond meets the person who could be the new 007 in the latest image from No Time to Die. Scheduled to hit theaters in April, the film marks Daniel Craig’s fifth and final appearance as the iconic spy, a role he’s portrayed since Casino Royale in 2006. So while fans are undoubtedly interested to see if No Time to Die gives the actor the fitting sendoff he deserves after all these years, they’re also curious to see who eventually succeeds Craig as the franchise lead. There’s always no shortage of viewer picks, but if reports are to believed, the next 007 is introduced in No Time to Die.

In the upcoming movie, Lashana Lynch plays Nomi, one of MI6’s younger agents who teams up with the aging Bond on his latest mission. Dating back to last summer, word’s been Nomi is going to take over for Bond as the new 007 by the film’s end, but that’s a plot point Lynch herself won’t confirm. One thing audiences do know for sure is that Bond and Nomi have a rather playful dynamic with each other, as it looks like James has met his match in the field. The duo’s impending partnership is highlighted in a fresh still image from the film.

Released as part of Fandango’s 2020 movie preview, this No Time To Die photo looks to be taken from a scene depicted in the recently released trailer, in which Bond and Nomi meet each other for the first time. Take a look at it for yourself in the space below:

Obviously, there aren’t many (if any) story details to be gleaned from this picture, but the image further illustrates Nomi’s significant role in No Time to Die. Lynch’s involvement in the film has many viewers excited, particularly since the Bond series (including Craig’s installments) has received its fair share of criticism for its portrayal of women. With Nomi, there’s an opportunity for the long-running franchise to evolve as it adapts to modern tastes and sensibilities. In fact, writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge said one of her goals with the No Time to Die screenplay was to make sure the film itself treated women properly - even if the character of James Bond remains stuck in his antiquated ways. EON seems pleased with what Waller-Bridge pulled off, seeing that the studio’s interested in bringing her back for Bond 26.

In the past handful of years, a number of high-profile Hollywood properties, including Star Wars, Marvel, and DC, found tremendous success producing female-led blockbusters. That isn’t to say Bond needs to follow suit after No Time to Die, but if Lynch is promoted to series lead, it would be a move that helps the franchise keep up with the times. After 25 films headlined by white men, giving the spotlight to a woman of color sounds like a refreshing way to keep Bond relevant, but time will tell if that’s what’ll happen. Regardless, through Nomi, No Time to Die may be able to give James Bond the Ilsa Faust to his Ethan Hunt.
