Nintendo has announced a new coral color for their Switch Lite that will release on April 3rd, 2020. This new hue comes as an addition to the three other preexisting colors from the initial launch of the Switch Lite, which include turquoise, grey, and yellow. The coral-colored console will retail for $199.99 when it is released later this year.
The Switch Lite first hit store shelves on September 20, 2019 and boasted improved battery life, a redesigned featherweight shell with improved ergonomics, and a reduced purchase price. It is targeted towards fans who wish to play primarily single-player games in handheld mode. It can play anything in the expansive library of great games on the Switch with the exception of Nintendo Labo, Just Dance 2020, and a few others which make use of the wireless, motion-controlled joy-con controllers. This is due to the integration of the joy-cons into the system, which has led to some having issues with the inability for the Switch’s usual forms of multiplayer. The system also does not support the dock, which allows games to be played on a TV or monitor.
According to Business Wire, there are “more ways than ever to tailor your Nintendo Switch gaming experiences to match your personal style.” This isn’t the only new version of Nintendo’s latest console, as the company has also created an Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch bundle. The aforementioned game and console pack includes a special console skin which is exclusive to the standard version of the Switch, and does not currently extend to the Lite version of the console.
Another unique feature of the Lite is the long-awaited replacement of directional buttons with a proper D-Pad. Fans praised Nintendo for this, however, the hype was soon eclipsed by issues with the Switch joy-con joysticks drifting. On top of this, Nintendo got hit with a drop in shares when the Switch Lite failed to meet sales estimates. Regardless of minor adversity, Nintendo is still succeeding wildly in the hardware business selling nearly a million Nintendo Switches during Black Friday last year.
Somewhere in-between rosewater and salmon, the latest splash of color accents the style of the handheld Nintendo Switch Lite console beautifully. It introduces some much needed variety in the sea of black, grey, and white gaming boxes. The soft tone, reminiscent of Japanese cherry blossoms, compliments the rounded edges and light frame and emanates the friendly, playful, and inviting feeling that Nintendo has cultivated for decades.
