Nintendo may be working on a Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System, for release later this year. Last holiday season, Nintendo caused quite a stir with the limited release of its Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition micro-console. Originally released way back in 1990, the original SNES supported cutting edge technology throughout the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. Standing as a marked improvement over the NES in terms of advanced graphics and sound capabilities, the SNES remains one of the most beloved consoles among gaming enthusiasts of all time.
After the NES mini outperformed all sales expectations late last year - and infamously caused a consumer shortage of the product that resulted in inflated prices from independent sellers on eBay and elsewhere - it only makes sense that Nintendo might want to followup the success of the former release with another likeminded micro-console. Even as the NES Classic Edition was never intended to be a permanent product, Nintendo will likely want to make sure that their next novelty release is made available in bulk for the 2017 holiday season.
According to Eurogamer, Nintendo is actively developing the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System for release later this year. The NES mini may no longer be in production, but in its place the very idea of an SNES mini should give Nintendo fans the world over something else to get excited for - especially if they were never able to get their hands on one of those coveted NES micro-consoles this past holiday season.
Well known for an extensive catalogue of iconic games from the 16-bit and 32-bit eras - most notably including Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Star Fox - any gamer who grew up with the SNES will probably flip for the micro-console version. Provided the rumors are true, Nintendo may very well have another best-selling novelty hit in the making with the SNES mini
Only time will tell whether or not a Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System console will become a reality towards the end of this year, but Nintendo would undoubtedly be missing out on a sizable profit margin if they didn’t produce and distribute a followup to its bestselling NES mini. For now, here’s to hoping that more people are able to get their hands on future Nintendo novelty releases going forward.
We’ll keep you posted on the rumored SNES Mini as more details come to light.
