NikkieTutorials has opened up with television host Ellen DeGeneres in her first interview since she came out as transgender. Nikki has had a lot of support from the community and is now happy to share her story.
Nikkie de Jager was made famous by her YouTube channel name NikkieTutorials. She is a Dutch makeup artist and beauty vlogger who helps people from all over the world get the new makeup look. She achieved online recognition in 2015 after her YouTube video, The Power of Makeup, went viral and inspired many other videos of people showing their faces with and without makeup.
According to E!, de Jager appeared on Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and spoke out about coming out as transgender. The vlogger was forced to come out after she revealed that she was going to be blackmailed in a video called “I’m Coming Out.” The online star explained to the host that she had started to receive emails from one particular person who had a threatening manner and whose goal was to ruin her life. De Jager joked by addressing the audience and saying, “but, plot twist, that didn’t happen."
The Dutch native told DeGeneres that she was so happy that it is 2020 and that acceptance was real. Before she uploaded the video, she cried out of fear of how she would be treated. The comedian asked the YouTube star at what age did she know that she was born into the wrong body. De Jager responded by saying that she had always felt confused about gender norms which stereotyped clothes and hairstyles. She attributed her mother’s love for helping and supporting her when she was young, saying that she was allowed to wear girl’s clothes.
While there was never a perfect time for the online makeup guru to come out, she is happy now that she can feel more comfortable to be herself. De Jager said she was relieved she no longer had to look over her shoulder that someone was going to out her, which is a very real concern that those in the transgender community - especially those in the public eye - have to deal with on a regular basis. The short-term goal of discussing her transgender identity is to help inspire others to be themselves within the transgender community. To make sure the segment ended on a high note, DeGeneres took it upon herself to surprise de Jager by donating $10,000 to The Trevor Project - a non-profit dedicated to supporting LGBTQ youth - in de Jager’s name.
