Wes Craven’s estate is currently exploring ideas for a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie and TV show. The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise started back in 1984 when Craven wrote and directed a film that would introduce the world to Fred Krueger. The film quickly spawned a franchise, resulting in six sequels, a crossover with Jason Voorhees, and a remake in 2010. Craven passed away in 2015, but his legacy has lived on through Freddy.
While A Nightmare on Elm Street is now one of the longest-running horror franchises out there, it wasn’t originally what Craven wanted. Craven didn’t want to make mindless sequels where Freddy simply slashed up teenagers like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers, yet the decision wasn’t up to him. A Nightmare on Elm Street was not a guaranteed success, and Craven actually had to give up the rights to his film just to get it made. This year was the 35th anniversary of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and after that amount of time, filmmakers can reclaim the copyright to their work. Craven’s estate reclaimed the right to A Nightmare on Elm Street a few months ago, and it looks like they aren’t wasting any time with continuing the franchise.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Craven’s estate is currently looking for ideas for a new A Nightmare on Elm Street. Sources claim that the estate is not only looking to develop a new movie but a TV series as well that would likely go to HBO Max.
Ever since the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was critically panned, there have been rumors of what could come next for the burnt man with knives for fingers. Robert Englund has said before that he would be down to play Freddy for one more movie, and Nancy Thompson actress Heather Langenkamp is also keen on returning to Elm Street. If these two stars were to return for a sequel, Craven’s estate could reboot the franchise with a sequel that takes place decades after the original, much like Blumhouse did with Halloween.
Needless to say, details on the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie and TV show are incredibly scarce. However, horror buffs will likely be thrilled by this news, especially since the future of Freddy is back with Craven’s estate. Fans were no doubt expecting to get another Nightmare on Elm Street movie eventually, but the news of a TV show is rather unexpected since Freddy hasn’t had his own TV show since Freddy’s Nightmares went off the air in 1990. Fans can expect to hear more updates on the next A Nightmare on Elm Street movie once Craven’s estate finds a pitch that they can get behind.
