Professional football player LeSean McCoy posting Avengers: Endgame spoilers on social media draws the ire of many fans. It’s no secret that Marvel Studios had gone to great lengths to preserve the secrecy of the film. From running a measured marketing campaign to not handing the cast full scripts, directors Joe and Anthony Russo were adamant about not ruining the experience of watching the film for others. Like Avengers: Infinity War, the filmmakers even put up a personal plea to the public to not intentionally spoil the flick. But it seems like the NFL player from the Buffalo Bills missed the memo when he ignorantly shared a key moment from the project online.
Endgame had the massive responsibility of wrapping up more than a decade’s worth of storytelling that began in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, it puts the spotlight on the remaining MCU heroes after Infinity War was told from Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) perspective. The franchise’s founding members also re-assemble as they attempt to restore the previous status quo in the universe following the Mad Titan’s cataclysmic snap that wiped out half of life in the galaxy. With so much riding on it, fans are understandably being sensitive of the idea of the story being spoiled before they’re able to watch it. Despite the film already grossing $1.2. billion at the global box office on its opening weekend alone, there are still fans out there who haven’t had the chance to watch the movie.
Sadly, McCoy didn’t seem to think twice about spoiling the experience for his more than 700,000 followers when he posted a video on his Twitter page diving straight into that key Endgame moment as reported by Deadline. The public initially gave him the benefit of the doubt as he may have done it because his emotions were running high. But not only did he triple down on his post by continuously tweeting about it, he even advised someone who said he was unfollowing him because of what he did to “feel free” to do just that. The pro athlete’s disregard for his followers who also happen to be MCU fans and nonchalance about the situation despite countless calling him out on it left a bad taste on people’s mouth.
To give people context about how serious the issue of spoilers is for some MCU fans, a moviegoer who shouted pivotal moments in Endgame was reportedly beaten up. While no one wants any kind of violence during screenings, it was such an atrocious thing to do for the person who intentionally spoiled the movie for several fans. What’s worse is that it’s pre-meditated, meaning it’s something he was planning to do. Granted that McCoy’s blunder isn’t as wicked as that, it’s still rude to just tweet out spoilers like that especially knowing that hundreds of thousands follow him on social media. There are some who feel that the MCU fan community is blowing this out of proportion, but Avengers 4 isn’t just any other film, it’s the culmination 11 years of world building, and regardless of what one personally feels about the universe it’s unfair not to acknowledge what they were able to achieve.
Aside from spoiling the film for anyone who hasn’t it who also happens to come across his tweets, this was totally disrespectful of everyone who have worked on the MCU building towards Avengers: Endgame. It’s reasonable for people to get emotional and naturally would want to talk about their thoughts after watching the film, but it can be done in a way that doesn’t ruin it for the rest of fans who have yet to have the same experience.
