Damon Lindelof’s upcoming Watchmen TV series delivers another mysterious look at what’s to come in a brand new video detailing what’s to come on HBO in 2019. The ad is essentially the premium cabler showing off all its (hopefully) impressive wares that are yet to come, including Big Little Lies season 2, the Deadwood revival movie, and, of course, the final season of Game of Thrones, which is shaping up to be the most anticipated TV event of the year. But while HBO is ramping up the spectacle with dragons and cowboys and Meryl Streep, Watchmen continues to be the network’s most curious new series.
Created by Lindelof as his follow-up to the acclaimed The Leftovers, Watchmen is a highly ambitious return to a particular genre, and Lindelof’s first foray into superheroes on TV. Though not another retelling of the classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel from the ‘80s, the new series does continue on from that series’ endpoint. There’s not a whole lot else to go on at the moment, other than the fact that the series has amassed a terrific ensemble cast that includes Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Louis Gossett Jr., Don Johnson, Tom Mison, Tim Blake Nelson, and more.

So far, Watchmen has been slowly teasing out its strange new world, one that has police in yellow masks and a new Rorschach apparently out and about. And while this new footage doesn’t reveal anything more about what audiences can expect, it does deliver a shot of King’s Angela Abar and one of Irons’s character blowing out a candle on a cake. What exactly the character is celebrating remains to be seen, but the color scheme of the sweet treat will almost certainly add fuel to the fire that Irons is playing Ozymandias. It’s not a whole lot to go on, but as with every minuscule footage reveal, HBO’s Watchmen series looks more and more intriguing. Check out the video below:
For HBO, that means holding on to the mantle it’s attained thanks to the adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novels, one that hopefully won’t be going anywhere as the network looks to stay in the Game of Thrones business for years to come. The big question now is: how will the likes of Watchmen add to the network’s appeal?
