A brand new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Chinese trailer is released and it features new footage, including the introduction of a space monster. In less than a month, the final installment of the Skywalker saga will grace the big screen, wrapping up the beloved franchise’s nine-film main saga.

Directed and written by J.J. Abrams, plot details for The Rise of Skywalker have been tightly under wraps with Disney and Lucasfilm running a measured marketing campaign. It’s been confirmed, however, that it’ll pick up after a year from the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it will feature the return of Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine. Thus far, there have been three full trailers and a handful of TV spots and featurettes, but a new full sneak peek has been rolled out for Chinese Star Wars fans.

Shared on YouTube by Gavin Feng, the new Rise of Skywalker trailer clocks in at a minute and primarily features previously released footage. However, it also debuts new footage, particularly from Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Chewbacca’s adventure aboard the Millennium Falcon. In the clip, the Resistance ace flyer takes on the iconic ship’s cockpit as they encounter a massive space monster. Behind them are a couple of TIE Fighters that they are trying to lose. China is one of the biggest markets for films. Comic book movies tend to do well there, roping in a significant amount of money bolstering box office performance for both Marvel and DC properties. Sadly, that isn’t the case with the Star Wars franchise. Out of the four films rolled out by Lucasfilm since the film series’ renaissance in 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made the most with $124 million. That’s a small portion considering that the film pocketed over $2 billion at the global box office. Given the untapped potential for Star Wars in the Chinese market, it’s understandable that Disney is pushing The Rise of Skywalker there.

The new scene is reminiscent of the old Millennium Falcon adventures from the original trilogy. Meanwhile, the introduction of the new space creature seems to be inspired by the legendary ship’s run with a space slug as they were fleeing Imperial troops. Considering that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the final chapter of Star Wars’ episodic movies, it makes sense that it is trying to evoke a sense of nostalgia with this new crop of franchise heroes. In hindsight, unlike Luke (Mark Hamill), Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Rey, Finn and Poe barely spent any time together in the previous films, and that’s a bummer considering that it appears all actors have great chemistry with each other.
