A new Spider-Man: Far From Home movie poster features Peter Parker (Tom Holland) posed in front of an Iron Man mural. Tony Stark aka. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) was key to Spider-Man’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discovering the Queens-based amateur hero and bringing him into the big leagues in Captain America: Civil War. Iron Man was a major presence in Spider-Man: Homecoming as well, with Tony taking on a mentor role to Peter as the younger superhero came into his own. Their bond as mentor/mentee, with layers of a father/son dynamic, was further explored across Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as Tony first lost Peter, then Peter had to say goodbye to Tony after he sacrificed himself to save the Earth from Thanos’ army.
With Spider-Man: Far From Home picking up after Avengers: Endgame, the movie will see Peter Parker grieving for his fallen mentor. The latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer revealed the story will force Peter to not only deal with his grief over Tony’s death, but be called upon as Spider-Man to take over for Iron Man as Earth’s protector. While on vacation in Europe, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits Spider-Man to team up with Mysterio in order to battle the villainous Elementals. However, the marketing for Far From Home continues to emphasize Peter’s loss of Iron Man as the emotional core of the movie.
In a new poster revealed on the official Spider-Man movie Twitter, the Iron Man mural in the full Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer looms large behind Peter Parker. The tweet is captioned with a quote from that same trailer, said by Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) to Peter, “I don’t think Tony would have done what he did, if he didn’t know you were going to be here after he was gone.” Check out the poster below.
Some may feel it’s a little cheap for Spider-Man: Far From Home to continue using Iron Man to promote the upcoming movie despite MCU fans knowing Tony Stark is dead. After all, Spider-Man: Homecoming faced similar criticisms for using one of the MCU’s most popular heroes to market a movie in which he only had a small role. However, the relationship between Spider-Man and Iron Man has become a beloved emotional throughline of the MCU movies, and an important part of that story is how Peter Parker deals with losing his mentor/father figure. Since Avengers: Endgame’s final moments dealt mainly with other heroes and their grief for Tony, Spider-Man: Far From Home will give the Marvel filmmakers a chance to explore Peter’s grief on screen in an emotionally honest manner.
Of course, there’s also a chance that Iron Man does return in some fashion. After all, Peter can be seen wearing Tony Stark’s glasses from Avengers: Infinity War in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer. Perhaps Iron Man left Peter a posthumous message of his own, or Tony’s glasses contain key information to Peter’s story in Far From Home in some other way. For now, fans will have to wait and see what Marvel has in store for Spider-Man in his upcoming solo sequel. No matter what, though, fans can expect Iron Man to have an emotional presence in Spider-Man: Far From Home as the film continues Peter Parker’s MCU story.
