A new trailer has been released showing fans what the remake of Resident Evil 3 - and its popular villain, Nemesis - will look like. The Resident Evil series has grown and changed drastically since its first iteration in 1996 and has pulled influences from several different genres. Resident Evil is sometimes credited with popularizing survival horror videos games and reinvigorating the public’s obsession with zombies. It is also Capcom’s highest selling video game franchise of all time.
Resident Evil 3 came out on the PlayStation in 1999. This title was when the game series first began leaning more towards action rather than survival horror. Players are tasked with killing zombies, but also avoiding an almost invulnerable creature named Nemesis that pursues them throughout the game. The game was praised for its revolutionary graphics and terrifying villian. It went on to sell over 3 million copies despite being criticized for its short length. With the new remake Capcom has already revealed several changes to the game including a revamped AI system for Nemesis.
The official Resident Evil Twitter page posted a new trailer early this morning. The trailer shows off incredibly impressive visuals, but more importantly gives viewers a first hand look at Nemesis. Throughout the trailer we see Jill Valentine being pursued and attacked by the monstrous creature. Fans were ecstatic to see Nemesis remade for modern consoles, but some of them had concerns. A few were concerned that the game will be far to action heavy, whereas others question why the Mercenaries mode is being cut.
Capcom has spent a considerable amount of time in the last few years remaking their older titles. After the success of 2017s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard interest in the popular series was reinvigorated. Both Resident Evil 5 and 6 had been criticized for moving away from the series’ survival horror roots, so Resident Evil 7s back to basics approach excited fans. Since then though there has been very little word on what will be next for the series. Instead Capcom has been focusing on remaking older titles rather than adding something new.
The Resident Evil franchise is one of the most famous video game series of all time. Not only have there been seven main titles, but several spin-offs and a movie franchise as well, and with that much content fans have almost constantly had something new to consume almost every year since the release of the original. With the amount of praise that the remake of Resident Evil 2 received it’s no wonder that Capcom is content remaking some of their older titles. Hopefully soon though fans will get to see whats next for the Resident Evil series.
