After more than two years, The New Mutants is finally moving forward, as director Josh Boone announces that a new trailer is coming in January. Based on the Marvel Comics series The New Mutants, the film is about a group of young mutants trapped in a secret facility, who must get a grasp on their abilities in order to save themselves and escape. The movie will be the last X-Men film from 20th Century Fox after Disney’s acquisition of them.
The cast is filled with familiar faces. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) plays Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) plays Magik, and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) plays Cannonball, to name a few. Director Josh Boone, most known for The Fault in Our Stars, intended for the film to be a lot darker in tone than any other X-Men movie. Since the start of filming, New Mutants has been riddled with rumors of a difficult production and reshoots, intense studio oversight, and the release date has been pushed back over two years. After Disney acquired the property, no one knew what was going to happen to the film, like when or if New Mutants would ever release. There have been little updates since then, until now.
According to director Josh Boone, who answered a comment on a recent post of his on Instagram, a new trailer for the film will be coming out in January. The New Mutants has already released one trailer back in October 2017, but nothing since. There hasn’t been any marketing for the film from Disney either, despite it being released next year before Black Widow. Despite that, there has been word that new test screenings are happening, with reports being that they went reasonably well, and the film is much more in line with Boone’s original, horror vision.
The New Mutants film had an original release date of April 13, 2018, but in January 2018 it was pushed back the first time, to February 22, 2019, almost a year later. The studio stated that the reasoning behind this change was to avoid facing off with Deadpool 2 at the box office. Then in March 2018, Fox delayed the movie again. They gave the February release date to Dark Phoenix, and moved New Mutants to August 2, 2019. With further issues over scheduling reshoots and alterations to the story, it was unclear when the film would be finished. The latest release date Fox gave the film was April 2020, and Disney has since confirmed they wouldn’t change it.
It’s possible that this later release date has been a gift in disguise for The New Mutants film. The many issues with production has brought attention to a film featuring a team that’s a lot less well-known than the X-Men. Also, in the comic world, The New Mutants outsold X-Men this month with the first issue of their return series. Though Disney has stated that they intend to release the film in theaters next year, we will have to see in April 2020 if The New Mutants film has survived all this turmoil.
