Now that Green Lantern has been confirmed to have a place on HBO Max in the shape of a TV series, that likely means the previously-announced movie for DCEU isn’t happening anymore. During a special presentation, WarnerMedia revealed details about its streaming platform HBO Max, such as the price, launch date, and the content users will be able to enjoy, including titles currently in development, like a Green Lantern TV show.
HBO Max will be the go-to place for DC Comics fans as the platform will not only have Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and all DCEU films (including Todd Phillips’ Joker), but also series like Watchmen and new series such as Strange Adventures, DC Super Hero High, and Green Lantern. This last one hasn’t had the best luck since that failed live-action film back in 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds, and a TV series is a new opportunity to do the character justice – while also serving as a nice incentive for viewers to subscribe to HBO Max.
But as exciting as the announcement of a Green Lantern TV series is, fans are now wondering if the DCEU film that has been trapped in pre-production limbo for years will still happen at some point or if the plan changed in favor of the series.
Green Lantern Has Been In Development For Years
Green Lantern Corps was announced back in 2014 as part of the DCEU, which at that time only had Man of Steel. The status of the film has been bouncing back and forth between “in development” and “on hold”, with no substantial updates in years. In 2017, David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes joined the project as screenwriters, and in 2018 Goyer reassured fans that the film was still in “active development” despite the franchise’s leadership shakeup. Later that year, Geoff Johns was brought in to rewrite the script. Green Lantern Corps has had a July 24, 2020 release date, but there haven’t been any moves towards production since then – and the current slate of films from the DCEU doesn’t include it.
Green Lantern Corps Won’t Happen Now
Although there hasn’t been confirmation from Warner Bros on it, it’s safe to say that Green Lantern Corps isn’t going to happen anymore – or at least not in the foreseeable future. Projects like Shazam!, Birds of Prey, and The Flash have found their way out of development hell, but Green Lantern is still there for a reason: either the studio is not fully convinced after the failure of the previous version or they can’t seem to find a story that will work. Whatever is going on, DC wouldn’t have gone for a big project like a Green Lantern TV show - one that is essentially their flagship DC series on their brand-new streaming service - if they still had plans to move forward with the film. In the end, a TV show is much better than no Green Lantern at all, especially after how long fans have been waiting to see the character back in action.
