A new promo spot for Dark Phoenix sees the X-Men go to space to rescue trapped astronauts. In two and a half weeks, the final film from the main X-Men saga rolls out. Directed by Simon Kinberg, a long-time X-Men film producer, the film’s narrative is based on Chris Claremont’s The Dark Phoenix saga, and will feature Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey fully transforming into the Dark Phoenix teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse.
Aside from Turner, Dark Phoenix will see the return of this continuity’s veteran actors playing their respective roles, such as James McAvoy’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast. Newer cast members like Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Evan Peters as Quicksilver and Alexandra Shipp as Storm are also slated to appear. This will be the final outings of said actors playing these iconic Marvel characters, as the franchise is expected to be rebooted once the mutants debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s movie and TV assets. Given this, many are looking forward to this bittersweet ending, and now fans can see a clip from the movie thanks to a newly released promo video.
Fox (via Moviebill) released a full clip from Dark Phoenix, which features the team gearing up for a space mission that Mystique calls a “simple extraction.” Cyclops and Quicksilver have a few snappy comments regarding this unconventional outing, but they both seem ecstatic about breaking new grounds. Once they lock onto their target, Raven commands Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) to take Peter as the two warp into the other spaceship. Once there, Quicksilver does his thing and rounds up all the passengers of the distressed vessel. Watch the video below:
Marketing for Dark Phoenix was slightly tweaked after Disney took over. Fox was promoting it as just another X-Men film before the House of Mouse took over, but Disney is focusing on selling the film as the culmination of everything that’ transpired in their established canon. This is similar to what they did with Avengers: Endgame for the MCU. They even released a legacy clip that highlights the early movies in the franchise, which certainly evokes nostalgia for those who’ve been following these stories since 2000.
Knowing the narrative of Dark Phoenix, the space mission is the inciting incident to Jean’s transformation as teased in previously released promo clips. From the looks of it, Raven has really taken the leadership role in the team, and her subordinates seem to not have any issues with it despite her past. This could definitely serve to make her eventual death at the hands of Jean more emotional.
