The next installment in the Call of Duty series has yet to be officially announced, but Activision Blizzard is promising that it will bring “game-changing experiences” to the fans.
The Call of Duty series has been receiving annual installments since 2005 and that regularity has done little to diminish the enthusiasm for the series, nor has it affected sales. Call of Duty has been published by Activision since its debut and the series has been a huge earner for the company, to the point where it is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The most recent Call of Duty games have been the source of microtransaction controversies and price gouging on behalf of the developers, but the audience still turns out for the latest Call of Duty game, or at least they do initially. It has been noticed that most fans only play a new Call of Duty title for around three months before moving on to something else.
The next Call of Duty has yet to be officially announced, but Activision Blizzard is already hyping the game up and setting expectations for what fans can expect going forward. Activision Blizzard recently held its Q1 2019 earnings call and COO Collister Johnson discussed the still unnamed Call of Duty game that will be released this year. According to MP1st, Johnson made statements about the diminishing post-launch audience of the recent Call of Duty titles and talked about how the next game is going to change that. Saying, “We expect that both the launch and post-launch content will bring game-changing experiences to our fans,” he added:
Information about the new Call of Duty game is scant, though it’s in enough of a playable state to have been shown to athletes at an event hosted by Activision. The next Call of Duty game is promised to feature a single player mode, which is something that fans have been concerned would be done away with in favor of a wholly multiplayer experience going forward. According to VG247, it was also revealed during the earnings call that information about the next Call of Duty game will be revealed before the end of the second financial quarter, which runs until the end of June.
“We also recognize that we need to do even more to maintain the breadth of our Call of Duty player base beyond the launch quarters and the Call of Duty team is hard at work on that for this fall’s big content release excitement for which is incredibly high around the organization.”
It’s unclear what Johnson means when he talks about the next Call of Duty title offering “game-changing experiences,” considering that the series is notorious for sticking to its formula, with the exception of the odd trend-chasing, as was the case with the addition of a battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. It’s likely that this is all just executive speak, as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was also described as delivering “game-changing experiences” in an Activision Blizzard investor document released in 2018.
The question now is whether these so-called “game-changing experiences” will be tied to the single-player content or to the familiar multiplayer modes that have made the Call of Duty series so successful in the past. It might be for the best to not expect too much… though there’s always hope.
