Netflix’s You has cast Charlie Barnett in a recurring role for the upcoming second season. The first season of You, based on a novel penned by Caroline Kepnes, became an audience-obsession on the streaming giant and follows bookstore manager Joe, on his journey to lock-down the woman of his dreams.
You first premiered on Lifetime then reached an international audience when it was adapted by Netflix and became a massive hit. The plot line follows Joe Goldberg - as he provides internal monologues - who becomes instantly infatuated with a young woman who strolls into the bookstore he manages. Played by Elizabeth Lail, Guinevere Beck (or, just Beck) is an aspiring writer and student who seems to be the ideal candidate for a romantic relationship. The seemingly innocent love story quickly reveals that the show is a psychological thriller - complete with mystery, violence and shocking twists. Since the nail-biting ending of season 1, season 2 has been highly anticipated and has announced that it is adding Barnett to the cast.
Barnett joins leading man Penn Badgley - who plays the charming, deceitful and complicated Joe - and Victoria Pedretti, who plays Joe’s new love interest, Love Quinn. According to Deadline, Barnett has been tapped to play Gabe, Love’s best friend, and closest confidant. Season 2 of You takes places in Los Angeles and Barnett’s character is set to personify urban city lifestyle with a career in acupuncture and specialty in psychedelic drugs. No doubt fans of the show will tune in to see how Gabe’s position in Love’s life can be problematic for the character with Joe now in town - or, he could prove a decent match against Joe’s devious schemes.
Barnett recently starred in Netflix’s dark comedy, Russian Doll, as Alan Zaveri. Alan is a man who meets Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and carries the same ill-fated lifestyle of living the same day over and over again. The two characters form a bond and Barnett quickly became a fan favorite from the series. Before landing the lead on Russian Doll, Barnett laid tracks in the TV world with notable roles in Chicago Fire, Secrets and Lies and Valor.
With small nuggets of information unveiled for season 2 and a cliffhanger ending of season 1, fans are left to speculate about what the future episodes of You will hold. The main characters of You are multi-dimensional with fascinating histories and casting has been vital to bringing them to life. Barnett’s previous work has proven he is up for the task. Whether he becomes central or only stays on You for a handful of episodes, Barnett will no doubt have a lasting impact on the series and will become another fan favorite. You season 2 is expected to release later this year.
