Netflix’s The Witcher gets the 90s treatment with an awesome, VHS style fan-made trailer. Based on the dark fantasy short stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher debuted on Netflix on December 20th and quickly became one of the streaming service’s most in-demand shows despite mostly poor reviews. At only eight episodes, season 1 of the wildly successful fantasy series barely scratched the surface of Sapkowski’s first novel, so Witcher fans were elated when the series was renewed for season 2 long before the first season had even aired. Not only that, but showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has revealed that she has plans for the story through season 7, showing that The Witcher’s future with Netflix certainly looks bright if the streaming service decides to keep it going for that long.
Starring Henry Cavill as the titular Witcher named Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher centers on Geralt as he’s suddenly thrust into a power struggle happening in the war-torn world he lives in known as The Continent. But, he’s not the only one whose life is turned upside down by destiny. A rogue sorceress named Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) and a young princess named Ciri (Freya Allen) are the other two main characters in season 1 whose lives intertwine with Geralt’s along the way. Despite these three characters being separated for most of season 1, Hissrich has confirmed that these core characters will be split up less in season 2. As exciting as it is to think about these characters spending more time together in future seasons, season 2 is still a long way away. In the meantime, fans have created excellent pieces of artwork, memes, and videos to keep The Witcher excitement lasting all year long.
YouTuber Jason Alan Dewey is one such fan who took to creating a 90s-style trailer for The Witcher. Along with highlighting some of the show’s best fight scenes and the series’ main characters, the trailer is set to the heavy metal cover of Jaskier the Bard’s (Joey Batey) “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher”. Not only does the trailer perfectly capture the 90s aesthetic with its VHS-style editing, but the cover of “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher” is the cherry on top that truly brings it all together. Check out the full fan-made trailer below.
Jaskier’s song has truly taken on a life of its own as well since the show first premiered. “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher” was a song that the Bard came up with to pay homage to Geralt’s monster-hunting exploits and has since gone viral amongst fans of the series. The catchy tune has been remixed in a number of different ways, including being hilariously remade in animated form.
The passion and excitement that fans of The Witcher exude in their work is a fantastic sign for the series and its future. Already, the fanbase has come together in a number of different ways to celebrate everything that the series has brought to the table so far. Not only that, but Hissrich has been incredibly open and receptive to the fanbase and their thoughts about the show. It’s clear that everyone wants the best for the series and adores Sapkowski’s original work, and fan-made creations like this are proof that The Witcher has become a beloved property by many.
