Netflix’s Mötley Crüe movie, The Dirt, has been confirmed for a March premiere date and a brand new trailer has also been released. Iconic 80s rockers Mötley Crüe were almost as famous for their extravagant, excess-fueled lifestyle as they were for hits such as “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Shout At The Devil” and in 2001, a book called The Dirt was published, chronicling the quartet’s shocking stories from years of non-stop touring and trashing hotel rooms. Written by the band themselves alongside Neil Strauss, The Dirt went on to become a bestseller and one of the most revealing autobiographies ever to see the light of day.
A movie adaptation of The Dirt has been in the works for over a decade, with the rights first being picked up by Paramount and MTV in 2006. The project never got off the ground and banded about between various studios before a stint in development hell. Mötley Crüe were determined to get the film made, however, and in 2017, Netflix acquired the rights, with production finally beginning in early 2018. Directed by Jeff Tremaine, The Dirt stars Daniel Webber as Vince Neil, Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars, Douglas Booth as Nikki Sixx and Machine Gun Kelly as Tommy Lee.
Netflix have now confirmed that The Dirt will premiere on March 22 across the globe and a full-length trailer has also been released. Giving a brief introduction to the band and its four members for those uninitiated in the ways of Crüe, the trailer establishes The Dirt’s central narrative of four talented musical misfits who form a band and seek greatness but are presented with a number of obstacles along the way. As one would expect, the trailer’s soundtrack is comprised heavily of Mötley Crüe tunes and the film itself will feature 14 classic songs, along with four new numbers.
For Mötley Crüe’s legions of fans across the world, the release of The Dirt will no doubt be nothing short of thrilling. The band possess one of the most unbelievable histories in rock and roll and taking those anecdotes from the page and onto the big screen will bring Mötley Crüe’s rollercoaster journey to life in a way never seen before.
It also seems like The Dirt will take a very different approach compared to 2018’s most popular musical biographical drama, Bohemian Rhapsody. The Oscar nominated Queen biopic was a success at the box office but did attract criticism from some fans for skimming over certain elements of the Queen story. Judging by its trailer, this will not be the case with The Dirt. Several dark and tragic events in Mötley Crüe’s history are included in the trailer, such as Nikki Sixx’s near-fatal overdose, Mick Mars’ degenerative bone condition and Vince Neil’s drunk car crash that took the life of Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas Dingley and severely injured two other people.
