The final 6 Underground trailer sets out to prove that “Bayhem” isn’t dead. With decades of experience as one of Hollywood’s most widely recognized (and at times ridiculed) directors, Michael Bay has earned a reputation for spectacle.
In recent years particularly, Bay’s work focused on the Transformers franchise, which seemed to long outlive its demand. Prior to the filming of 2017’s fifth Transformers installment, Transformers: The Last Knight, Bay revealed that it would be his last film as director for the franchise. The film encountered a somewhat disastrous box office and critical reception, and to date, Bay’s future with the series (whether as producer or otherwise), appears to be on permanent hiatus. While news of Bay reaching the end of the line with Transformers isn’t likely to trouble too many people, there was a time when the director’s work offered legitimate thrills as well as breathtaking action sequences. Early films such as The Rock as well as the Bad Boys movies helped give Bay the reputation for being a top tier blockbuster filmmaker, even if his production budgets were nothing like they’ve been for the Transformers franchise.
Now, some three years after the release of The Last Knight, Bay is back with a (somewhat) scaled back action film, the likes of which appears to take more from his early work than his most recent efforts. 6 Underground is set to arrive in select theaters on December 11 and Netflix as of December 13, and aside from starring Ryan Reynolds, the film offers a script from Deadpool and Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. So far, what we’ve seen from 6 Underground looks quite promising, particularly if you happen to be a fan of onscreen carnage and high-intensity action. The final trailer for the new film has now arrived from Netflix, and just in case there was ever any doubt, it does look like the days of “Bayhem” are far from over. Check out the trailer below:
The plot of 6 Underground focuses on an elite group of six agents from around the world, who are brought together by One (Ryan Reynolds). Together, these six professionals have been selected for their exceptional skills as well as their willingness to fake their own deaths, resulting in a future in which they do not exist. Without any real connection to the everyday world as we know it, the six agents are freed from the regular constraints of society and can engage in the fight against evil beyond what any typical agent ever could. Beyond the signature Bay carnage and Reynolds as leading man, the film also offers an outstanding supporting cast, which includes Mélanie Laurent, Corey Hawkins, Adria Arjona, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Lior Raz, Payman Maadi and Dave Franco.
Over the years, Bay has had plenty of chances to prove himself worthy of his place as a legitimate action filmmaker. Unfortunately for him, there has all too often been more reason to doubt the watchability of his offerings than to stand up and take notice. With 6 Underground, Bay has a new chance to regain the reputation he has left behind since being caught up with duds like The Island or much of the Transformers franchise. This time around he’s teamed up with some very impressive and reliable talents, and what we’ve seen from trailers indeed looks promising. Perhaps then, 6 Underground will be the film to breathe new life into Bay’s career.
