Netflix has released a new batch of images from their upcoming female wrestling comedy series GLOW. Following the success of Orange is the New Black, the streaming service and producer Jenji Kohan are re-teaming for the new show. Based on the infamous female wrestling circuit from the ’80s, GLOW will see Alison Brie enter the lavish world of the Las Vegas-centered outfit under the tutelage of Marc Maron’s has-been ringleader. Kohan first came to fame thanks to her Showtime series Weeds, but OITNB helped boost her star power as one of Netflix’s most popular series to date.
Last summer, it was announced Kohan would be joining with creators Liz Flahive (Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Weeds) to bring the story to life, using Brie’s fictional character as a window into the uncanny and brief life of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Since then, we’ve only seen a short teaser for the series, highlighting the period-trappings, comedy, and action. Now, we’ve not only got our first look at the new show, but a description and premiere date to match.
Netflix have announced GLOW will be coming on June 23rd to the streaming service, just a few weeks after the fifth season of OITNB drops. They’ve also released a batch of images showing off Brie, Maron, and the other characters, along with a synopsis for the upcoming series. Check them out below:

Like the real-world version of GLOW, the show will take place in the ’80s and feature a group of former and aspiring actors, models, and other entertainers looking to reignite their careers or kick them off in the first place. As such, expect the comedy to be a mix of physical and emotional, with plenty of dark beats thrown in. Like Weeds, Nurse Jackie, and OITNB, the show will likely feature a darker blend of humor, as well as a focus on the multi-faceted lives of the women involved.
GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.
With the premiere just a few short months away, we’ll likely see a proper trailer follow these images any day now. While we’ve had glimpses so far, it’ll be nice to see some of the action and direction teased and get a sense for Brie’s character. Her turns on Community and Mad Men have proven she can handle both comedy and action, so it’ll be intriguing to watch her blend the two in the new series.
The full first season of GLOW will premiere on June 23rd on Netflix.
