Ever since Netflix first launched House of Cards in 2013, the streaming hub has bolstered its programming slate with a wealth of buzzy original series. By the end of 2016, it had 30 original scripted shows, plus plans to double that number by the end of this year. In fact, Variety reported that the company aims to dedicate 50 percent of their content to original programming, growing its in-house lineup to a staggering 1,000 hours.
But while Netflix is adding new projects, it’s also expanding proven staples. Early standout Orange Is the New Black, crime favorite Narcos, and summer megahit Stranger Things are among the titles that have been renewed for future chapters. As fans await these series’ next seasons, Netflix has created a fun offshoot to tide them over in the form of Netflix Infinite Runner.
As its title suggests, Infinite Runner is a free online running game that features some of their most popular shows’ biggest characters. Players can choose from OITNB protagonist Piper Chapman, Stranger Things’ pre-teen Mike Wheeler, Narcos’ kingpin Pablo Escobar, or the title character from Marco Polo. Each level is set in the world of the series in question, whether it be Litchfield Penitentiary from OITNB, Narcos’ Colombian jungles, or Stranger Things’ fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. It also includes a low-fi version of the shows’ theme tunes as you play.
Its setup is about as simple as basic as they come. As you navigate each version’s various obstacles, you can use your space bar to jump or double jump. Narcos’ Escobar has to evade capture, OITNB’s Piper has to dodge cafeteria trays while she collects jail yard chickens, and Stranger Things’ Mike has to escape both security from Hawkins National Laboratory and the clutches of the monstrous Demogorgon.
The inclusion of Marco Polo is a little odd, given that the drama was canceled after two seasons earlier this year and cost Netflix a $200 million loss, according to THR. It’s possible the game was created before that announcement and is only being promoted now, or maybe its designers just really wanted to throw Marco Polo a bone. As for the other series, OITNB’s is expected to return in June, and premiere dates for Narcos’ third season and Stranger Things’ second have yet to be announced.
Netflix Infinite Runner is far from complex, but if you’ve got some time to spare, it’s an enjoyable way to kill a couple minutes. You can try it out here.
