Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Knight Before Christmas, Holiday in the Wild, The Holiday Calendar and Christmas Inheritance.
The Knight Before Christmas was the latest entry into the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe (NCCU, yes, that’s a thing). Like its predecessors, which include the Christmas Prince franchise and The Princess Switch, it’s part of Netflix’s answer-to-Hallmark slate, and features plenty of fluffy romance. It also spoils Holiday in the Wild, another Netflix Christmas movie, in the process.
In The Knight Before Christmas, Medieval knight Sir Cole travels to present-day Ohio on a valiant quest. There he meets teacher Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens), they fall in love and the rest is history. At one point, the charming Sir Cole is seen getting acquainted with the magic box that makes merry (aka the TV, for non-Medieval knights). The film he eventually settles on, and is absolutely mesmerized by, is Holiday in the Wild, starring Rob Lowe and Kristin Davis.
Holiday in the Wild follows Kate on her second honeymoon (solo) in Africa after her husband leaves her. There, she meets hunky pilot Derek. Sure, it’s not hard to guess what happens next, but that doesn’t mean fans want to see it unfold on the TV within the TV, while watching a completely different movie. It’s easy to see why Netflix would want to promote its Original movies via other Originals, but perhaps the streamer should leave big climactic moments for the actual viewing experience.
It’s not the first time Netflix has spoiled another Christmas movie in another Christmas movie either. At this rate, this Netflix Christmas Movie inception will become as much of a festive tradition as the movies themselves. The first instance of Netflix ruining another Christmas movie was in The Holiday Calendar, when protagonist Josh’s friend Fernando is seen watching Christmas Inheritance. Except it was the ending, rather than the moment when the main couple get together, that was spoiled, revealing Ellen picks Jake over Gray.
Sure, these Netflix Christmas movies themselves are not hard to predict. They have all the hallmarks of, well, a Hallmark movie. And yet, that’s part of their appeal. They’re comforting and fun to watch. While fans may not be expecting anything other than a happy ending for the main couple, it’s still a journey they should be allowed to embark on without fear of spoilers.
