This weekend (January 10), Netflix is adding a documentary about the world of cheerleading, a comedy drama series starring RuPaul, and a comedy series firing shots at medical and police procedural shows. The world of streaming continues to be a competitive one, with various platforms offering different content (both licensed and original), but Netflix continues with its formula of adding new movies and TV shows every week, and it still works quite well.
Last week, the platform added a lot of licensed content, most notably The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Return of the King, both Kill Bill movies, and titles from the James Bond collection. On the original content front, Netflix brought the drama series Spinning Out, the final season of Anne with an E, and BBC’s version of Dracula. This week’s new additions have something for every taste, with the romantic thriller The Tourist, the superhero adventure comedy Zoom, the horror classic The Evil Dead, and the documentary Betty White: First Lady of Television.
As for original content, Netflix users will get the chance to watch a documentary offering a deep look at the world of cheerleading, a comedy series with RuPaul like you’ve never seen her before, and a comedy series about a pair of doctors who also happen to be cops. Here are the best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this weekend - January 10.
Cheer
Coming to Netflix this weekend, Cheer is a documentary series directed by Greg Whiteley that offers a real look at cheerleading, far from the stereotype that pop culture has been establishing for years. Cheer follows the team of competitive cheerleaders at Navarro College in Corsicana, TX, which also happens to be a 14-time National Championship winning team. The Netflix series explores the mission of the team, the background of some of its members, and the bond that’s created during practices and competitions.
AJ and the Queen
Drag Race star RuPaul has a new show, though this one is not a reality competition series. Netflix’s AJ and the Queen follows Ruby Red (RuPaul), a down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club with an unlikely sidekick: AJ (Izzy Gaspersz), a recently orphaned, tough-talking 10 year-old stowaway. Ruby’s message of love and acceptance will not only have an impact on her audience but also on her relationship with AJ, with whom she will form a special bond – though the road to that is not easy. Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race will recognize a lot of faces in the series, such as Latrice Royale, Bianca del Rio, Valentina, Chad Michaels, Manila Luzon, Pandora Boxx, and many, many more.
Medical Police
Medical dramas and police procedural series are full of clichés – and Medical Police is taking advantage of that. This comedy series parodies all those shows about doctors and cops by mixing them into one. Medical Police follows two American physicians (Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel) in Brazil who discover a deadly virus, and are recruited by the government to find a cure and expose a conspiracy. Think of all those clichés and truly unbelievable things that happen in medical and police dramas and you’ll find them here, with a good dose of humor and a reality check, when it lands on Netflix this weekend.
