If you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend, we’re here to help with this guide to the latest and best Netflix movie and TV show releases. This week’s offerings include a special from comedian Kevin Hart to celebrate Black History month, the return of a beloved family sitcom, and a sports drama from acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh.
Last week’s big releases included Velvet Buzzsaw, a bizarre horror movie set in the world of high-priced modern art, and mystery series Russian Doll, in which Natasha Lyonne plays a woman stuck in a time loop where she keeps dying. Also coming up this month is the highly-anticipated comic book adaptation The Umbrella Academy, a TV show about a group of superpowered people who were raised together as children, and are brought back together to prevent the end of the world.
Winter is still in effect, so turn up the heat, curl up on the couch, and check out the best new releases coming to Netflix this weekend.
High Flying Bird
Steven Soderbergh (Behind The Candelabra) turns his attention to the world of professional basketball in Netflix Original movie High Flying Bird, a drama about a sports agent (played by Moonlight’s André Holland) and a talented young basketball player (Melvin Gregg, who played DeMarcus Tillman in American Vandal season 2), who embark on an ambitious power play amid a basketball league lockout. The stellar cast also includes veteran actor Bill Duke (Predator), Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan, and recent breakout star Zazie Beetz, who played Domino in Deadpool 2. This is the second Soderbergh movie, after last year’s Unsane, to be shot entirely on an iPhone.
One Day At A Time Season 3
Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce’s touching Netflix Original sitcom One Day At A Time returns for a third season this weekend. The series focuses on a Cuban-American family in Los Angeles, led by US Army Nurse Corps veteran Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado), who is raising her two kids with the help of her mother, Lydia (Rita Merino), a Cuban immigrant. The trailer for season 3 revealed two major guest stars from cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero. Fresh Off the Boat’s Alex Quijano also joins the cast as Mateo, Penelope’s new love interest.
Big Mouth: My Furry Valentine
The awkward and embarrassing world of early teen puberty is back in Big Mouth: My Furry Valentine, a special Valentine’s episode of the Netflix Original animated series. As Bridgeton Middle School celebrates Valentine’s Day, our cast of characters are still desperately looking for love - whether it’s in the form of their fellow students, their favorite pillow, and Coach Steve’s new “girlfriend who is things.” This being Big Mouth, you can probably expect to laugh, cringe, and be grossed out in equal measure - but at least the Hormone Monsters are there to help our heroes through one of the toughest days of the year… even if they often hinder more than they help.
Kevin Hart’s Guide To Black History
February is, of course, Black History Month, and comedian Kevin Hart is here to recount some of the greatest achievements in black history in Netflix Original comedy special Kevin Hart’s Guide To Black History Month. With the help of actors like Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery, Hart tells his daughter (played by Saniyya Sidney) about the exploits of people like Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to go to space, and Josephine Baker, a French Resistance agent and entertainer who was the first African-American woman to star in a major motion picture.
