Netflix announces that it has partnered with a number of famous Japanese production companies to create a whole bunch of new original anime TV shows. The streaming service already has relationships with Production I.G. (Psycho-Pass) and bones (Blood Blockade Battlefront), and these new additions join its roster in the wake of the success of the likes of Devilman Crybaby.
Anime’s popularity is something that Netflix has been smart to cotton on to, and 2018 saw an explosion in the anime offerings on the service. With acclaimed titles like Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, Aggretsuko and other original productions received positively by consumers, expansion into more Netflix original anime series is a sensible decision. Furthermore, with Netflix announcing that some of its live-action projects like Altered Carbon are due for anime spinoffs, it makes sense that the company would enlist the help of experienced studios to ensure success.
The streaming service announced that it would be focusing on increasing its current anime programming by partnering with the likes of Anima, Sublimation, and David Production for upcoming new Netflix original series. The press release states that Netflix will be creating its Altered Carbon anime spinoff, Altered Carbon: Resleeved, as a joint production with these other houses. The company will also be creating a Dragon’s Dogma anime and a new series called SPRIGGAN to add to its current anime roster. These projects are going to be developed alongside Production I.G.‘s Ghost in the Shell anime, which is due out in 2020, and other original works.
The fact that these new Netflix original anime TV shows are making their way to the streaming platform is good news. The library of anime on the service has been growing, and while it’s always nice to get classics like Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul conveniently available all in the same place, the interest in Netflix’s original works has definitely increased in the time that they’ve been innovating their own material.
Devilman Crybaby in particular was a stand-out hit, and it’s more than likely that Netflix is partnering with these powerhouses to ensure that its upcoming work on original properties is just as successful. Having experienced hands at the helm, especially considering the work of Production I.G. on the likes of Psycho-Pass, is going to be key in capturing the spirit of the source material that the company is going for.
