Over 15 years ago, NCIS got a backdoor pilot in an episode of JAG. While JAG followed the legal proceedings of military crimes, NCIS followed just how the crimes were solved. A team of agents followed the clues, interviewing military personnel and their families, to solve the mystery. The crimes range from everyday burglaries to international conspiracies.

The NCIS agents are a courageous and intelligent bunch. They solve crimes and go up against dangerous people for a living. That would seemingly indicate that if they attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the world of Harry Potter that their sorting would be pretty obvious. Surprisingly, that’s not the case for a lot of them. Some agents could easily fit into more than one Hogwarts House. The sorting hat has its work cut out for it.

Abby Sciuto: Ravenclaw

For the majority of the show’s run, Abby Sciuto was the resident NCIS forensic specialist. If samples needed to be analyzed or computer records needed to be searched, she was the woman in charge. She also happened to be one of the most difficult characters to sort.

Despite Abby seeming like an easy fit for Ravenclaw with her immense intellect and creativity, Abby is also a pretty good fit for Hufflepuff. Loyalty and family mean everything to her, and she was certainly one of the most hardworking employees NCIS had. Her outside of the box thinking and ability to pull results from seemingly out of thin air make Ravenclaw win out.

Tony DiNozzo: Slytherin

Fans of Tony would probably want to sort him into Gryffindor thanks to his bravery and stubborn attitude. That’s a fair assessment, but Tony’s Slytherin instincts usually take over his Gryffindor ones. The sorting hat says Slytherin wins out.

Tony is an incredibly ambitious person. When Gibbs briefly retires, Tony ends up leading his own team. That’s not solely because he was the senior agent on Gibbs’ team, but because he worked his way up to that position. Anything he could do to get himself in the NCIS Director’s good graces, he did, including taking on secret missions he couldn’t tell his team about. Tony’s ambition would sometimes outweigh everything else.

Jimmy Palmer: Hufflepuff

Palmer is a bright individual. He’s proven that as a medical student following in Dr. Mallard’s footsteps early in the series. Like his mentor, he also loves a good bit of trivia. Despite his love of learning, Palmer is clearly a Hufflepuff.

He’s often afraid of upsetting people, preferring to keep the peace instead of voicing his opinion if it stirs up conflict. He’s also incredibly loyal to the NCIS teams he works with, trying his best to keep their secrets and help them out. Like Abby, he’s one of the hardest working employees the agency has, often pulling all-nighters to get work done.

Tim McGee: Ravenclaw

Currently one of the longest-running members of the cast, Tim McGee is probably the easiest character to sort. He’s grown into his own as an agent, demonstrating loyalty, bravery, and cunning as he’s found his way. At his heart though, McGee will always be a Ravenclaw.

He first joined the series thanks to his computer expertise. More often than not, he found himself helping out with forensic investigations instead of being out in the field. Tim’s technological expertise has come in handy, but he’s not just book smart. He’s also adept at reading people and understanding how to approach them. Likewise, he’s got a creative side as he became a best selling author throughout the show, writing novels inspired by his work at NCIS.

Ziva David: Slytherin

Ziva David is a complicated woman. Even after leaving the agency, her presence is often still felt - and she keeps coming back. Like Tony, just because she sorts into Slytherin doesn’t make her a villain.

Instead, Ziva’s Slytherin sorting is the result of cunning and playing her emotions close to the vest. She isn’t exactly as ambitious as other Slytherins in the series, but she is secretive. Ziva prefers for her secrets to stay hers. She also prefers to deal with her problems on her own instead of with a team. Ziva is almost always the definition of a lone wolf.

Ellie Bishop: Ravenclaw

One of the newer additions to the series, Bishop started working as an analyst for the NSA before taking a job with NCIS. As someone who spent a large part of her career going through data and searching for patterns, it’s clear that she’s one smart investigator.

The way Bishop chooses to work her cases is very indicative of her Ravenclaw personality. She doesn’t rely on interviews, but on data to help form her opinions. She treats cases like puzzles to be solved, ones where all she has to do is make sure she finds all of the pieces.

Nick Torres: Slytherin

Like Abby, Nick is a very difficult character to sort. He’s equally motivated by his career and his loyalty to his family. That loyalty, and his hard work to achieve his goals, makes him lean slightly in the Hufflepuff direction. Ultimately, however, his Slytherin nature wins out.

Nick is probably one of the best undercover operatives for NCIS the show has given fans. He lived and worked in other countries, completely cut off from the people he knew before joining Gibbs’ team. His ability to slip in and out of covers - he has more than 30 - makes him one of the most cunning characters in the franchise.

Donald “Ducky” Mallard: Ravenclaw

Dr. Mallard is like a walking trivia competition. There isn’t a subject that he doesn’t have a passing familiarity with - or a story to tell. Some of that comes with his age and experience, but a lot of it comes from the fact that he’s a Ravenclaw.

Ducky has a deep love for learning. He truly believes that knowledge is power. He’s never met a book or a documentary that he didn’t learn from, and that love for ever-expanding knowledge makes him the perfect fit for his house.

Leon Vance: Slytherin

Like many of the other high ranking officials, fans have seen in the NCIS universe, Leon Vance is an ambitious man. He became NCIS Director after working his way up, and not caring who he had to step over to get there.

That makes Vance a pretty ruthless agent, but he’s one who gets the job done. Though his position requires him to play by the rules now, he’s not above looking the other way if a team member has to break a few rules to make the agency look good. Vance is a Slytherin.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs: Gryffindor

A natural-born leader with a stubborn attitude who allows his emotions to dictate how he pursues his cases? Sounds like Agent Gibbs is a Gryffindor through and through.

Even agents who aren’t assigned to his team defer to Gibbs when passing through the series. His leadership qualities tend to stand out, even though he’s a man of few words. While Gibbs, more often than not, is a supportive team leader, he can also be very rigid in his approach to dealing with difficult cases. He does, after all, have his own set of rules that his team is expected to follow at all times.
