Warning: SPOILERS for War of the Realms Strikeforce: The War Avengers
Namor may be Marvel’s first mutant, but we have yet to see him grace the big screen with his presence. In War of the Realms Strikeforce: The War Avengers, the King of Atlantis just got the opportunity to team up with some of Marvel’s biggest movie stars… and turned it down.
For those not aware, there is a LOT going on in Marvel Comics right now. The Dark Elf King, Malekith, has brought a war to Earth, and he’s winning–big. The Avengers are all on different missions, and doing the best they can to save Earth from a serious defeat. Captain Marvel’s leading the War Avengers, and knows Namor could be a game-changer for Marvel’s heroes. And just like in the movies, Namor is sitting this round out.
In Namor’s defense, Deadpool did lead a whole bunch of the fire-breathing sharks (yes, you read that right) from Muspelhem undersea – which seemed like a smart idea at the time. However Namor was not to thrilled, and it certainly didn’t help convince him to want to work with the Avengers. When Captain Marvel asks him for a temporary truce, to defeat a common enemy, he responds the way most people who deal with Deadpool would. “That jabbering moron drags your problem down to my doorstep and you think you can leverage that into an alliance?”
If you don’t know already, Namor AKA the Sub-Mariner rules over the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis. He has super strength, he can fly, and yes, he can also talk to fish (although it’s a little unclear if Namor is stronger than DC’s Aquaman). Either way, not a bad person to have on your side when fighting for the future of Earth and humanity.
As readers come to find out, Deadpool did have the right idea about the sharks according to Lady Sif… but that doesn’t convince Namor. After refusing Carol’s invitation flat out, he tells Captain Marvel to leave with promise that Atlantis will be able to fend for itself. But she doesn’t leave empty handed: Deadpool asks to join the team and they’re happy to have him (yes, really). When it comes to the end of the world, it must be all about the numbers. And Carol isn’t above scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Was this Namor’s only chance to team up with the Marvel movie heroes? Will we ever see him on the big screen? Will he change his mind and come to the rescue? Perhaps the tides will turn and he will seek the Avengers help….. We just might find out as the latest Marvel crossover event, War of the Realms, continues. But for now, he is happy as a clam ruling over his people undersea – where there are no dark elves or frost giants (for now).
War of the Realms Strikeforce: The War Avengers is available now from Marvel Comics, and at your local comic shop.
