Disney continues to flourish with original films thriving in animation and live-action, the Mouse House has also been dominating the blockbusters as well. Thanks to the continued success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the resurgence of the Star Wars franchise after acquiring Lucasfilm, the studio has built up its brand.
One of the traditions Disney and other studios like to follow is keeping talent in house and working with the same people who’ve been great pairings in the past. They brought in Donnie Yen for his first Disney experience with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it looks like the actor may now be interested in joining their other tentpole franchise.
Thanks to recent rumors that Marvel could be developing a Namor project, possibly called The Sub-Mariner, fans have begun giving their suggestions as to who should play the underwater hero. Yen quickly became a fan favorite choice, which social media helped bring to Yen’s attention. The actor has continued to retweet these suggestions on Twitter (via ComicBook), telling his followers: “Wow that would be pretty cool! What do you guys think?”

While Yen has been around for quite some time, Rogue One certainly brought the actor more mainstream attention in the U.S. The martial arts expert’s age may be over 50, but with his Ip Man franchise continuing and his involvement in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, he continues to show that he has what it takes to be an action star. Namor is inherently incredibly powerful, utilizing hand-to-hand combat primarily, but also uses a trident at some point. Yen clearly would be an excellent choice for the role, as he demonstrated in Rogue One that using a staff (very similar to a trident) is no problem either.
One of the rumors surrounding the character is that Namor will get his MCU debut as part of the upcoming Inhumans TV series on ABC. As great as Yen could be in the role, it would be surprising to see the actor make a transition to television, even temporarily.
As is so often the case with superhero movies and their cinematic universes, possible new characters become part of the rumor mill far in advance of their being officially announced, much less seen on screen. For the time being, a Sub-Mariner film is just that, which means any potential casting announcement is likely even further away. Marvel Studio may know what they have planned for Namor (if anything), but it’s unlikely they’re going to let fans in on those plans right away.
