The show ended without the list being completed, so why did My Name Is Earl season 5 never happen? Jason Lee made his name appearing in some of Kevin Smith’s earlier work like Mallrats and Dogma. After a few attempts at leading roles in movies like Stealing Harvard and Dreamcatcher didn’t pan out, he found the perfect role in My Name Is Earl. The show’s simple premise found a lowlife thief named Earl Hickey winning the lottery, but instantly losing his ticket in an accident. He takes this as a sign he needs to change his ways, so he makes a list of all the bad things he’s done and works through it to help improve his karma.

My Name Is Earl followed the titular character as he slowly worked through the list, with help from his well-meaning but dimwitted brother Randy (Ethan Suplee, The Wolf Of Wall Street). While the series was running, Lee also scored movie success with the Alvin And The Chipmunks franchise. My Name Is Earl occasionally changed up the formula during its run, which came to an abrupt end in 2009 after four seasons.

The show ended without Earl having completed his mission or having sorted out his karma, so why did My Name Is Earl season 5 not happen and is it still possible?

My Name Is Earl Ended On A Cliffhanger

My Name Is Earl’s season 4 finale had Earl track down the father of Dodge and convince him to be part of his son’s life. A DNA test shockingly reveals that Earl actually is Dodge’s father. It’s also revealed Darnell wasn’t Earl Jr’s father, but the identity of the father was a mystery the show was leaving for the next season until it was unexpectedly canceled.

A My Name Is Earl Continuation Is Possible (But Unlikely)

Everybody involved with the show wants to return for My Name Is Earl season 5 or some kind of revival, but there’s been little sign of movement. The show’s creator Greg Garcia (Family Guy) later revealed they hadn’t figured out who Earl Jr’s father was, and the show wouldn’t have ended with Earl finishing the list.

The planned ending involved Earl becoming stuck on a tricky item on his list, only for a character who has wronged Earl to approach him with a list of his own. Earl learns he’s inspired others to right their own wrongs and put some good out into the world, so he tears up his list knowing his karma is now balanced.

Raising Hope (Kinda) Resolved Earl’s Story

The Greg Garcia created series Raising Hope contains a notable My Name Is Earl easter egg. The pilot episode features a news broadcast about a crook finishing a long list of wrongs he was making amends for, but the TV is turned off before the reporter reveals how it ended.
